Mom's Birthplace
Oil
16 x 20
Private Collection
This was my present to my mom this year for Mother's Day. She was born in the bottom left room in 1932. My maternal great Grandma and Grandpa lived there at the time. Mom said the doctor walked across the railroad tracks to deliver her; and she was told, "the mill almost shut down when she was born". She spent a lot of time there as a little girl, and has some fond memories. G
randma boarded people in the upstairs, and sometimes she would find that hobos had snuck in and slept. Then mom would have to help her disinfect the beds. Mom remembers mill workers hanging around in the front yard waiting to go to work. Also that Grandma had huge bins of flour in her kitchen, and planters of coleus on the front porch. Unfortunately, Grandma was killed in an auto accident on the way to visit my Grandpa in the hospital. I think when mom was about 16. I'm not sure of the date really. I tried to paint the house as she may remember it from the 1940's. The house was located at 400 S. Main Street, Kannapolis, NC, and was torn down not long ago. There's just a grassy patch left. So glad I had my photos. This is "Mom's Birthplace" 16 x 20 Oil on Gesoboard. Cathy Matthews
